Project DescriptionVisitors to the administrative headquarters for Los Angeles County, the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, are now welcomed by a newly renovated Customer Service Center. Intricate glass artwork designed by artist Cha-Rie Tang was incorporated into the panelized Ethospace Herman Miller wall system, comprised of cherry wood and translucent glass panels. For this piece, Tang illustrates “the variety of landscapes, from the mountains to the ocean, from the desert to the valley,” and depicts how, “people from all over the world with diverse cultures set roots here [in Los Angeles], pursuing individual dreams, sharing common interests and working for the public good.” In order to organize her ideas, Tang separated her subjects with a translucent image of a shoreline. People are illustrated on the top line, and the environment is depicted on the second line, with the shoreline below. The translucent glass artwork spans the length behind the reception desk, greeting visitors as they enter the Customer Service Center. The County of Los Angeles is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse communities in the world, encompassing over 4, 000 square miles and over 10 million residents. Cha-Rie Tang believes that, “This is a great opportunity to celebrate joyful diversity in a dignified and inspiring sort of way.” About the ArtistCha-Rie Tang describes herself as having, “a long standing love affair with glass, especially glass as architecture.” She works most extensively with a technique call fused glass frit painting. This technique involves laying down colored glass powders and chips in successive layers on a sheet of clear glass, melting them, and then manipulating them with stencils and brushwork until the desired effects are achieved. Tang received a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and her Masters of Architecture from the University of Colorado. She has designed artworks for Pasadena’s Area Rapid Transit Service, the Monrovia Metro Station and for the Exposition Park Regional Branch Library. |
