Project DescriptionThe 11 acre Sorensen Park is about 15 miles southeast of the city of Los Angeles. In the late 1940s residents of Whittier organized the Sorensen Park and Recreation Association. Their efforts, in part, led to the founding of a library within Sorensen Park. The original 1,000 square foot library, dedicated in 1956, was never expanded due to budget constraints. The new library, replacing the original, will be certified by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a program of the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is the national benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building project is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live or work. The selected artist will execute a permanent artwork which engages visitors with the park, library and community center and explores themes of recreation, literacy and community. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2010. |
