Project Description

The La Puente area was originally inhabited by Gabrielino Indians until Spanish soldier and explorer Don Gaspar de Portola arrived in 1769. According to legend, Portola named the region “Llana de la Puente,” meaning “Plain of the Bridge,” after making a bridge of poles so his party could cross the San Jose Creek. The city of La Puente was established in 1841 when European settlers arrived by wagon train from New Mexico. In the 1930s the area was recognized for its abundance of citrus, walnut and avocado groves. The new 4th Avenue Park will be located in the neighborhood of Avocado Heights, an active equestrian and gardening community. The sloped five-acre site features tall grasses and numerous trees, and is surrounded on three sides by residences. Due to the proximity to homes, the park will offer primarily passive activities and will include walking trails, a handicap-accessible playground, a skate park, several groves of trees, numerous low seating walls, gardens and a picnic area. The selected artist will collaborate with the design team and execute a permanent artwork or art elements which will be integrated into and compliment the park’s landscaping scheme. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011.

About the Artist

Al Price is a sculptor fascinated by motion.  Both his interior kinetic sculptures and his recent public projects employ linear compositions that merge the elegant and simple with the vigorous and dynamic. He creates forms that are defined by lines: lines that overlap, lines that extend into space, and layers of lines that create fascinating matrices. His sculptures appear to twist, turn, locomote, and defy stasis; the moving viewer is the ideal audience. Price has recently completed projects several projects in Arizona for the new Sky Harbor Rental Car Center, the Arizona State University Foundation, Valley Metro Rail, Inc., and the award-winning Kyrene Monte Vista Pedestrian Bridge which frames views of the nearby mountains and conveys a sense of movement as ever-changing patterns of light and shadow enliven the span.
